I've just got myself some new sketchbooks (from Sakura), and I thought I would try a black paper sketchbook since it's something I've never tried before. The way to draw in black paper is definitely different than drawing in white paper. Also normal art supplies that you would use in white paper don't work so well in black paper.
I have come to the conclusion that the best materials to use on black paper are the following: gel pens with bright colors, white acrylic pens, metallic color pencils, some color pencils (depending on opacity).
Below are some images done using these supplies, so from top to bottom and left to right, here are the supplies used: silver gel pen, golden gel pen, Derwent metallic pencils, Prismacolor gold color pencil, white gel pen, Derwent metallic pencils and silver gel pen, white gel pen, and again Derwent metallic pencils.
I love these sketchbooks, they feel very sturdy and high quality. The artwork that comes in the wrapper is beautiful, so much so that I just cut it from the wrapper and glued it on the inside of the sketchbook, seem like a waste to throw that out.
The only downside is that they are not sketchbooks indicated for water-media (although they can take very light washes). But other then that, they are great.
I am definitely going to a more illustration approach. I haven't tried to paint something more realistic on these black sketchbooks, I like the idea of using them more for doodles and just play. So far I am really enjoying the effects I get with these.
Thanks for stopping by!
