Neurographic Art

Atualizado: 20 de jan. de 2022

One day, searching for videos casually on youtube, I came across neurographic art. I was fascinated by the concept and the final drawings seemed so interesting that I had to give it a try.

Neurographic art is a variation of neuroart (or neuroesthetics, etc), and if you want to explore more in depth its origins, a simple search will lead you to more in depth articles about it. As I interpret it, it's a form of art that allows you to process your emotions and work through difficult periods of your life. Making art as a way to overcome psychological issues and general anxiety.

The idea is, using a pen or pencil, to draw random lines over a sheet of paper for 3 seconds. After the lines are defined and you are happy with it (if you are not, you can keep adding lines), unite the points of intersection of the lines, as if it was a little neuron.

You can see some examples of the neurographic art I've done, where I used a black pen and watercolors. I got some inspiration from doodles on pinterest, and by searching for neurographic art online.

I really like the effect and it makes for a good starting point for a drawing, more on the abstract side. I am putting these available as mail art, to exchange with other artists.

This technique can also be useful if you don't know what to draw or are out of inspiration. The random lines united make interesting patterns that can help you make a drawing, even if it's simple and towards the abstract side.

In addition, even though I haven't tried, this should be interesting with other materials, like acrylic markers or even oil pastels. I might give that a try at some point.

It's also interesting to apply other shapes once you are finished with developing the lines, like circles, using a cup or some circular object - that's how I did the drawing above, I added the 2 circles at the end.

I think these make the perfect drawing exercise for when you are feeling lazy or just uninspired, and I am enjoying exchanging these as mail art.

So I hope you also give it a try and thanks for stopping by!
